Joel has been a technician an artist, designer, and fabricator. As an Air Force Non-Commissioned Officer, he received advanced training in electronics and computer programming. After leaving the military, he studied art, design, and mechanics and was a Scenic Lead at the world-renowned Chicago Scenic Studios. While there, he created special effects and properties for theatre, television, and film and designed and created exhibits for world-class museums of art and science. As a scenic artist, he developed proficiency in digital design and advanced manufacturing and he used his first 3D printer in 1991, it was love at first sight. 

Joel was Co-founder and Executive Director of Arkansas’s first Makerspace, The Arkansas Regional Innovation Hub. While at the Hub, he received an invitation to attend a Maker-focused reception at the White House. Joel was later asked to participate in the White House Science and Technology Cabinet's efforts to create the “Nation of Makers”, a 501c3 that supports the Maker Movement in the United States.

 After leaving the Innovation Hub, Joel consulted and assisted in product development and prototyping for entrepreneurs, and he has a hand in six patented devices. He has worked with cities, universities, and private industries around the nation on makerspace and innovation space design and issues of placemaking, talent retention, and innovative economic development. Joel has been invited to speak at events around the nation. He has presented three times in Washington D.C. at the Capitol Hill Maker Faire and for the Congressional Maker Caucus concerning the new “Maker Economy” and micro and distributed manufacturing. He was a presenter for the  FabLearn Conference at Columbia Teachers College, and at The Nation of Makers Conference.

Joel is the Senior Solutions Specialist for MatterHackers, the largest 3D printing solutions provider in the United States.
